A Look Back at the Best SUVs of 2007

While economic trends of 2007 led to a drop in the number of sport utility vehicles sold, manufacturers continued to improve on their designs and produce SUVs in droves, leading customers to wonder which SUV came out as “best SUV 2007.”

Consumer Guide Automotive ranked “best SUV 2007” within five different classes, ranging from compact to premium large. The compact class was led by the Honda CR-V and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. The award in the standard mid-size class was won by the Honda Pilot, while the premium mid-size category went to a trio consisting of the Acura MDX, the Cadillac SRX, and the Lexus RX.

There was another three-way tie for the best standard large SUV, between the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Chevrolet Suburban, and the GMC Yukon, but Consumer Guide’s “best SUV 2007” in the premium large class was the enduring Cadillac Escalade.

Other sources are not so cut-and-dry about their rankings, however. Forbes runs down a list of several SUVs that are wonderful for specific purposes, such as the Honda Pilot, ranked their “Best Family-Friendly SUV,” or the Lexus RX Hybrid, the “Best Green SUV.”

The Ford Escape Hybrid was the most fuel-efficient SUV of 2007, boasting 31 city and 29 highway miles to the gallon. The Mercury Mariner, Lexus RX 400h, and Toyota Highlander also deserve honorable mentions for their mileage per gallon. The 2007 models of each of these SUVs was rated by the EPA for at least 25 miles per gallon.

Many of the top SUVs of 2007 appeared on several different “best SUV 2007” lists, and collecting multiple sources of data is the best way to get informed before making a purchase decision. As always, what may be the best SUV for one person’s use may appear less than stellar to another, so make sure that the SUV you are considering is right for you before you take the plunge.
